Fact Sheets on Malathion
April 2001 fact sheet and April 2003 fact sheet

Brief on Fact Sheets

Fact Sheet 2003 states that: ''During ultra-low volume application, malathion is applied at a rage of 60.8 grams/hectare for ULV ground, or 260 grams/hectare for ULV aerial application. Even for someone who is outdoors during the spray application, these application rates would result in estimated exposures that are far below the exposures that produce adverse effects in laboratory animals.'' (Fact Sheet April 2001 states that automobile paint can be damaged at levels above 230 grams/hectare)

Inspite of the assurance in Fact Sheet 2003 regarding bystander exposure to 'low exposures of malathion', certain measures are recommended by the PMRA to ''Reduce exposure'', i.e., remain indoors during and immediately after spraying (they don't specify the time), close all windows and doors, turn off air conditioning units and close vents before spraying begins, bring laundry, toys and pets indoors before the spraying begins, cover swimming pool surfaces if feasible, cover outdoor furniture, play equipment or rinse the pesticide off after spraying is finished, wash home grown fruit and vegetables before cooking or eating (this means that organic properties will become contaminated), cover ornamental fish ponds, protect your eyes, wash clothes that come in direct contact with spray separately from other laundry.

Symptoms from exposure to malathion (according to Fact Sheet 2003):
Nausea, dizziness, confusion, headaches, weakness, diarrhea. Eye, skin, nose or throat irritation and breathing problems.

The labels of malathion for adulticiding all mention damage to automobile paint from malathion use. Check out malathion labels at:
EDDENET site to access the labels of pesticides www.eddenet.ca/4.0/4.0.asp

The labels of malathion (for adulticiding) state* : avoid breathing spray mist, avoid prolonged contact with skin, eyes and clothing, avoid contamination of feed and foods, avoid contamination of bodies of water.
Some labels state that: Hazardous if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin, toxic to bees exposed to direct treatment, OR to residues on crops.
*Reg No: 9337-Fyfanon ULV Ultra Low Volume Concentrate Insecticide.
*Reg No: 25638-Malathion 95 ULV Insecticide
*Reg NO:14597-Wilson Malathion ULV Insecticide Concentrate
*Reg No: 16198-Malathion Label - Gardex Malathion ULV Concentrate

"...The PMRA's conclusions indicate that the continued use of malathion for adult mosquito control in residential areas, using ground or aerial ultra-low volume application, will not pose a health concern."
