Write a letter to the Minister of Health

There is a threat of being sprayed with Malathion to kill mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile virus. For a person with sensitivities, this is a nightmare! Should your home get contaminated, where would you live? In the event that you have to leave your home during the spraying or fogging, who will cover your costs and who will provide you with accommodation that will be safe for you?

Chemicals are the very reason why some people have fallen very ill. Spraying or fogging dangerous chemicals around us will no doubt increase the number of people falling ill with sensitivities: with no testing facilities, no treatment, no hospitals nor any support structure in place to care for the casualties of this chemical war.

A Fact sheet on Malathion, which can be found at: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/pmra-arla/english/pdf/fact/fs_malathion-e.pdf states that people with sensitivities to chemicals should see their health care provider in case of 'overexposure'. We have to ask our Minister of Health to provide us with a list of these doctors in our area and also for a hospital that would care for people with sensitivities to chemicals, also known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Please write in great numbers. We are interested in knowing the response that you receive.

Dear Minister McLellan,

As a person living with (or, as a person who has a family member living with... or, a friend living with...) Multiple Chemical Sensitivity ( or Environmental Illness), I wish to draw your attention to a Health Canada document, titled ''Fact Sheet on the use of Malathion in Mosquito Control Programs'' April 2003, ISBN: 0-662-33998-3, Catalogue Number: H113-2/13-2003E-IN.

In the above mentioned document, the public is advised to see their health care provider in case they have been 'overexposed' to Malathion. The document goes onto say, ''If you are particularly sensitive to chemical exposure, discuss this with your health care provider''. I congratulate you for thinking about people who are sensitive to chemicals. I would like you to provide me with a list of doctors, in my area, who have been trained in environmental medicine and who know how to recognize Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or environmental illness. I also need to know a list of hospitals in my area, which are geared to treat people with sensitivities to chemicals.

Under our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, it is our basic human right to have access to health care. It is also our basic human right to breathe clean air and to live in health. People who are sensitive to chemicals can react to very low doses of pesticides - much lower than the levels that will be used while fogging or spraying Malathion. Staying indoors will not protect us. This goes completely against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Might I know what compensation you have planned for us in the event of injury?

I look forward to your early reply.

Yours sincerely,
